What is the difference between the LED and fluorescent systems?

Fluorescent tubes are an older but very effective technology. Until recently, they were the most efficient way to produce general light, tanning lamps, and even red light therapy bulbs. They are still very useful, very efficient and cost effective. The downside is that they don't last very long and they use mercury inside the tube. They are also fairly fragile and difficult to ship. As far as red light therapy beds are concerned, they do a good job using 30-40 minute sessions.

LEDs are a newer technology that really started catching on in the 1970s, and by 2000, the technology was good enough to start seeing it in standard lighting. It is rapidly advancing and in many circumstances, they are clearly superior to fluorescent tubes. In particular, LEDs perform better in the visible light spectrum, including in red light therapy beds. They can produce from 3x to 8x more light per watt in single band applications, and they are better suited for single band products because they don't waste energy creating "harmonics", meaning other frequencies that aren't wanted. Fluorescent tubes always create harmonic frequencies, so a portion of the energy that is put into the bulb actually makes light that is not useful. LEDs cost a lot more, but they last 10x longer, so they are actually less expensive in the long run, they just have a higher up front cost.

For red light therapy beds, fluorescent tubes are good, but LED is the clear winner because it produces many times more light in the right frequency, so session times go from 40 minutes to just 5 or 10, although many people will stay longer. A spa will need to replace fluorescent tubes about once every 2 years, while LED will last 20 years in the same environment. As a commercial business, LEDs also carry a bit of cache and the customer will always prefer to use a LED bed over fluorescent simply due to the (justifiable) perceived advantages.
Why are the LED system more expensive than the fluorescent systems?
They simply cost more to produce. Fluorescent bulbs are an old technology that has been around over 100 years, and they are mass produced at a level that makes them less expensive. While LEDs have been around for decades, they are still a rapidly developing technology, and the ability to use them for high light output has only recently been achieved. The electronics we use cost more than the electronics for a fluorescent bulb as well.

Please note that the LEDs last ten times longer than fluorescent bulbs, so in the long run, they are actually less expensive to operate.

LEDs cost less now than they did a decade ago, and the price is slowly dropping even more. Because general purpose fluorescent bulbs are being phased out of general use, you can expect their prices to go up in time.

What if I don't like my new system?
We have a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee, so just call us. It is rare that we get a customer that doesn't like their new red light therapy system, but regardless, you are covered.

How long will it take to get my order?
That depends on where you live relative to North Carolina. For most customers, that means a shipping time of 1 to 7 days. it generally takes one or two days for us to re-test and ship a system out, so the total time is almost always 2 to 9 days. We will call you with tracking info, so you will know the day it is expected to be delivered well ahead of time.

How will my order arrive?
Small items like parts and even fluorescent tubes and LED channels are all sent via Fedex. You can usually expect them in a week or less from the time you place your order.

Full systems take 2-9 days total time and they will arrive on a 18 wheeler with a lift gate. We will call you ahead of time with the 800 number and tracking number for your system, so you can call the truck line (usually R+L Carriers) and schedule a delivery. You will need to have two able bodied people to handle the shipment. It will be on a pallet that is around 40"x40", standing up on edge. If there is any damage, REFUSE THE SHIPMENT, then call us. We will handle everything and replace it at no cost to you.

What is the difference in the 4K, 6K, 8K and 12K systems?
The most obvious difference is the number of LEDs. The K refers to thousands, so the 4K system has around 4000 LEDs (4096, actually) and the 8K has twice that, (8192 LEDs). Some of the beds, like the 6K and 8K share the same platform/frame, but others do not. You need to check the specifications for complete information, including size of the red light system and the power requirements. Other features like a port for the remote timer are only available on the larger units, so check the specifications.

How long will my red lights last before I have to replace them?
The fluorescent tubes (Rejuvindescence) last around 2000-2400 hours before the output drops below 70% of new. The LEDs fade some over time but are much more constant and will last up to 20,000 hours, making them more affordable in the long run.

Will these bulbs or LED channels fit in a regular tanning bed?
Most beds, yes. They are based on a F71 size bulb, which is what most tanning beds use. Fluorescent bulbs must be matched up with the right wattage red light bulb, so if you have a bed that uses a combination of 100w and 160w tanning bulbs, you will need to replace with red light bulbs that have the same wattage rating. We have all of them in stock. If you have K11/S12 lamp starters in your tanning bed, you will use the same starters for red lights, as the technology is basically the same, only the phosphors inside the tube are different.

LEDs are somewhat simpler in that you can install them in a bed that has 100w, 120w or 160w tanning bulbs, and they will automatically convert the power to the proper amount needed The only thing you need to remember is that if you install LEDs in a tanning bed that uses K11/S12 lamp starters, you MUST REMOVE THE LAMP STARTER. Lamp starters connect both ends of the lamp for a second, which you don't want to do with LEDs.

How long have you been in business?
We started in 1985 as a distributor in the tanning industry, and soon after purchased a manufacturer (SunMaster) to begin building our own systems. Over the years, we developed relationships with Alpha Industries, LTI and others that have helped us transition to red light therapy systems. We started building red light beds around 2006 or so, and introduced the first affordable LED system that can compete with beds costing tens of thousands more in 2018.

Can I use any credit card? Paypal? Finance or leasing options?
Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or any feature that PayPal offers through our PayPal option. As for financing or leasing, just call us at 1-800-274-1744 so we can provide you with the most up to date info on what we have available.

How long does it take to see results?
Six weeks for maximum results, but you will notice a difference in about four, assuming you use the system most days while you are building up results, and every other day to maintain them.

Where can I get replacement parts I don't see on the website?
Just call us. The problem is that many parts aren't very universal. Things like hydraulic cylinders (some call them shocks, or pistons). What works on one model won't on another, so we don't put them on the website because it would be too easy to get the wrong part. Just get the serial and model number off your system and call us. If you call by noon EST, we can usually get it out the same day.

What are the risks of using red light therapy beds?
As far as we can tell, none. You can't get a burn from it because it has no ultraviolet. The beds are warm but not hot enough to cause issues. There hasn't been any research that showed any risks to the user.

Will these red light beds tan you?
No, they produce light in the red part of the spectrum. Tanning is from light that is just beyond the violet part of the spectrum (ULTRAviolet), so the frequencies are far apart. Trying to mix tanning lamps and red light therapy bulbs in the same system doesn't work very well either. It tends to make a system that makes a lot of light, but gives very little result.

Why isn't there an option for different shippers? Can you overnight something for me?
We can overnight, but most of our items are odd or long shaped, so it is very expensive. 90% of the time when someone asks for a quote for overnight, they are taken aback by how much Fedex charges for it. Because the items we sell vary in length, there is no way to incorporate this into the website anyway.

We always pick the best option for shipping, there really isn't a need for choice. If it is big, like a red light bed, we have no choice but to ship via truckline. We do the same for large quantities of red light bulbs and LED channels (over 100). Everything else goes Fedex, whom we've worked a deal with due to our volume. We have shipped out millions of 6 foot glass tubes and have found that the damage with Fedex is about 75% less than with UPS, so we choose Fedex.

Can I get a better price if I buy multiple systems?
Call us at 1-800-274-1744 for a quote. We will discount what we can on 2 or 3 beds, but 4 and more get substantial discounts.

What if I need service or support on my system?
Our systems are pretty simple. Often, it is just a matter of replacing the LED channel, bulb or starter. If your system needs more complicated work, any electrician should be able to do it, and they can call us for information before they start. They are fairly simple inside.

Where are you located? Do you have a showroom?
Our address is 6208 Technology Dr., Browns Summit, NC 27214. Technically, we are in the city limits of Greensboro, NC, and yes we have a showroom. We recommend calling ahead if you would like to visit. 1-800-274-1744

How do your LED systems compare to the expensive systems costing $30,000 and up?
Very well. The main difference between our systems and their is our use of LED channels instead of panels. They are much less expensive to produce, you use many of them in our beds, but that adds to economy of scale as we produce a LOT of these channels. By using methods learned from mass producing tanning beds, and in many instances by using the same parts, we have created a family of systems that cost much less even while the red light output is the same.

Another difference is how easy they are to repair or maintain. If you have a failure in a part of the LEDs sometime in the future, other manufacturers require you call them, and they dispatch a technician. This means you pay for driving or flying someone down to repair it. With a PhotoTech LED bed, we ship you an inexpensive channel, and you swap it out like you would a light bulb. The electronics are in the tube, so the entire driver and light package is replaced at the same time, guaranteeing the problem is fixed. It takes less than 30 minutes and you can do it yourself.

Why do you use the same frame for LED beds as you do for fluorescent beds?
Two basic reasons: First, we have used that frame for a number of years, and people love it. It is solid steel, it will last a couple of decades or longer, and it is a proven platform.

Second is simple: It costs less, which means you pay less. This is part of our design philosophy, to make the system so that it is easier to manufacture, easier to maintain, and cost less, too. We *could* completely redesign a new platform, but it wouldn't be "better" and the expense would have to be passed along to you, the customer.

How big are your systems? Can they handle a large person?
Most of our systems use what we call the "mid frame", which is 39" wide by 81" long. They can certainly handle a large person, rated for 300 pounds. They are all steel, welded construction and built to last a lifetime.

What is the warranty?
See the warranty page for details, but basically One Year Limited. Acrylics, labor and glass tubes are 30 days. We also have a 30 day money back guarantee.

Can I upgrade my system as new technology comes out?
Yes! That is the beauty of our design. Even if the new technology has a different wattage requirement, it won't matter because the electronics are built inside the channel. You will be able to swap out your old LEDs and swap in the new ones. Converting an entire red light therapy system takes about 1 hour and only requires a Phillips screwdriver.

How much maintenance is involved in owning a red light therapy bed??
Very little, and it is mainly about keeping it clean. The outer shell is powder coated steel, the acrylic surfaces are designed for continuous use. The acrylic shields should only be cleaned with an EPA approved cleaner designed for plastics. Tanning bed acrylic cleaner is an acceptable substitute, is inexpensive, and readily available.

Will I need special wiring for my new red light system?
Most of our systems are 120v powered, and if you have a 20 amp circuit, you probably won't need special wiring. If you are using this unit in a heavy traffic environment, it is always good to have the system on its own dedicated circuit. 230v systems will always require a dedicated circuit. These dedicate circuits are fairly simple, and any electrician can install them fairly inexpensively in most locations.

What is the difference 633nm and 660nm?
They both looks "red", but they are two very different frequencies that serve different purposes. Some of these purposes are just now being discovered and/or researched. Generally speaking, 633nm is more common for cosmetic purposes, such as people who are looking to rejuvenate their skin. 660nm is more commonly used by athletes who believe it can relieve sore or injured muscles.

Are these systems FDA approved?
No red light therapy systems are "approved" by the FDA, which is a common misconception. They don't "approve" light therapy of any kind. Unlike most, ours are listed with the FDA, and are built to exacting standards.

Should I use eye protection when using the red light bed?
I isn't necessary for protection, but some prefer to wear some kind of eye covering simply because of the intensity of the lights.

Are there special lotions I should use when using the red light therapy bed?
There are several brands on the market, although we can't attest to their effectiveness. If you are using 633nm lights with the goal of skin rejuvenation, the most important thing you can do is use high quality, all natural moisturizers.

I want to convert a tanning bed to a red light bed, can you help?
Most of the time you can. Call us at 1-800-274-1744 with the brand name and model of your system so we may assist you.

Is there an age limit to using a red light therapy system?
There is no legal age limit to using red light therapy (633nm or 660nm), as the lights do not produce any ultraviolet. We would still suggest anyone under the age of 16 do so only after consulting with their physician.

I want to open a red light therapy salon, can you help?
Call us at 1-800-275-1744 for technical support. We can't answer all your questions, as we don't claim to be experts in every single locale, but we can help you by providing general information and steer you in the right direction to find other information.

I'm a salon owner, do you have brochures to hand out to my potential customers?
We offer general red light therapy brochures at about cost to our customers who purchase red light therapy systems from us. They are affordable, high quality, and are guaranteed to leave a positive impression with your customers.

How much electricity will my red light system consume?
A bit more than a hair dryer. This isn't much actually, and is due to the efficiency of LEDs in general, and our system in particular. This is how we are able to achieve higher light output than most systems, while using less electricity. The actual amp draw is listed for each bed in the manual and on the website.

Will I need to upgrade my air conditioning if I add 2 or 4 red light beds to a business?
That will depend on the amount of headroom you currently have in your existing system. Most find they do not, but if you system is already operating at maximum capacity, you may find you need another 1/4 ton of HVAC for each 32 channel system you install.

What do salons charge for red light therapy?
That is radically different for different parts of the country, and according to the type system you are using, 633 or 660, and your overall operating. Call us for more info.

What do I do if my shipment is damaged in shipment?
Refuse it, so it is sent back, and call us. We will have you a new system on the way in one business day. Do not accept damaged merchandise ever.

How do you clean a red light therapy bed?
Any EPA approved cleaner for plastics is fine. Tanning bed disinfectant is very available and very inexpensive, and what we send with each system.

Will the red light bed connect to a TMax or similar system?
Most of our systems will. Any bed we advertise as "remote ready" will connect to a TMax or similar computer or stand alone timer system.

Are these systems durable enough for a high traffic commercial environment?
Very much so. These frame have been used for over 20 years in high traffic environments without a single frame failure. Their all steel construction will handle clients up to 300 pounds, and are built to last at least two decades. We still have many customers using this frame, after purchasing a system in the 1990s. Parts are very available through us, but it unlikely you will every need one, other than acrylics and hydraulic shocks every decade.

These look like tanning beds, why?
The original purpose of this frame was for tanning beds. At one time, we sold tanning beds using these frames, starting in the 1990s (we started before that). Our customers love these frames for their durability, comfort and extreme long life. It only made sense to use them for right light therapy. This is part of the reason our system are so significantly less expensive. Rather than produce an unknown, new system, we choose to use a planform with 10s of thousands of models in the field, with never a single failure of the frame. Buy with confidence your system will stand up to use, abuse and heavy loads.

Is there any ultraviolet output from these red light therapy beds?
None. We use only narrow band LEDs, in channels custom made for us alone. We have measured them using state of the art spectrometer equipment all the way from UVC through the visible spectrum, and are certain these is zero ultraviolet output.

When do you have special sales?
We are a manufacturer that sells direct to the public, rather than through a network of dealers. This is part of the reason our prices are so low. Because of this, we generally do not have special sales. We will sometimes have models with minor flaws in the finish (what we call "scratch and dent") and you can call for current inventory, however, these models sell fast.

Do you buy used red light therapy systems?
Because we manufacture our own, there just isn't a benefit to our buying products from other manufacturers, so we do not.

What is the difference in your LED system and others?
In output, ours are one of the highest output systems made. In cost, we typically cost a fraction of others because we build and sell direct, and because we have decades of experience in mass production. While others may build and sell dozens of units a year, our experience is with selling thousands or tens of thousand of system. This means our systems are more uniform, easier to replace LEDs if the need arises (it is amazingly simple; trust us, you can do it yourself). And our system are based by us, a company with decades of experience in light therapy.

What is the difference in your fluorescent red light beds and others?
We still build some fluorescent systems, although the vast majority of buyers choose LED. The two big differences are the frame, which is the exact same frame as our more expensive LED systems. Solid steel, built to last decades, made for extreme use. The second is us. We offer a money back guarantee, award winning service, and you are buying direct from the same people who build your bed. We were the first in the USA to build red light fluorescent systems, and we have more experience than anyone. In short, overall quality is much higher with PhotoTech, whether you buy LEDs or fluorescent tube versions.
